Condition Guide

Condition Guide – Ceramics & Glass

At Rummage Antiques, all ceramics and glass are carefully inspected and graded using a clear four-tier condition system. This helps you buy with confidence, particularly when purchasing individual replacement pieces.

Please note: due to the nature of vintage and antique items, signs of age and light use are normal and expected. Our grading reflects overall appearance and usability, not factory-new condition.

Fair

Noticeable wear or damage

Items graded Fair show visible faults that are apparent without close inspection.

This may include:

  • Chips to the rim, foot, or handle

  • Hairline cracks

  • Clouding, heavy scratching, or staining

  • Pronounced crazing or glaze wear

Fair items remain usable unless otherwise stated but are best suited to budget buyers, display, or temporary replacements. Any significant faults will always be described and photographed.

Good

Minor signs of wear consistent with age

Items graded Good are presentable and structurally sound, with only minor issues visible on closer inspection.

This may include:

  • Very small flea bites or pin-head nibs

  • Light surface wear or utensil marks

  • Light age-related crazing (ceramics)

There are no cracks, and the item displays well. This is the minimum condition grade we typically offer for online sale.

Very Good

Well cared for with minimal wear

Items graded Very Good are clean, sharp, and attractive, making them ideal for everyday use or replacement purposes.

Characteristics include:

  • No chips or cracks

  • Clear glass with no clouding

  • Bright glaze and strong pattern definition

  • Minimal to no surface wear

Any imperfections, if present, are extremely minor.

Excellent

Near-perfect condition

Items graded Excellent show little to no evidence of use and are often suitable for collectors.

Typically:

  • No visible wear or damage

  • Crisp rims and bases

  • Bright, clear glass or glaze

  • May appear unused or barely handled

This grade is reserved for the best examples only.
